The Addams Family!

Dadadada snap snap dadadada snap snap dadadada dadadada dadadada snap snap!

And that is what you hear even before the curtain rises at The Addams Family on Broadway! Even if you weren’t familiar with the story line or characters, you would be hard pressed to find anyone who doesn’t know the famous theme song. The Addams Family on Broadway is based on the American TV show of the same name. The television show comes from the characters found in Charles Addams comic strip from the New Yorker. The Addams Family is very eclectic and dark.

The musical follows an original storyline in which Wednesday (Rachel Potter,) the teenage daughter, has fallen in love with a ‘normal’ boy. When the families decide to meet chaos ensues. Bebe Neuwirth and Roger Rees play Mortitia and Gomez Addams, the parents of Wednesday and her younger brother, Pugsley who has a pet iguana that starts off as a baby and grows into a larger than life pet that sleeps under the bed!

Camp Broadway was lucky enough to not only go backstage after the show, but also get a chance to interview Adam Riegler, the young actor who plays Pugsley Addams. Riegler originated the role over a year ago in Chicago for the out of town tryout, and has stayed with the cast through the one-year birthday, which was Friday April 8th, when we saw the show! Mr. Riegler told us his favorite part of the production is the number “One Normal Night” as he loves his pet iguana. He also likes the scene called “MUB” for Monster Under the Bed, in which we see the large iguana indeed, living under his bed!

Riegler recalls first wanting to try theatre after watching his mother’s theatre classes in CT where she taught. He was around seven at the time. He said it looked like so much fun! Now at age 12, Riegler is starring in his second Broadway show after playing Young Shrek on Broadway as well.

What’s Reiglers advice for other young kids who love theatre and want to pursue it as a hobby or professionally? “You can’t stop,” Riegler told us, “You gotta keep going.”

The Addams Family plays at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre located at 205 W. 46th Street. Last year the Camp Broadway kids had the privilege of attending. This year we will be seeing Wonderland as our Camp show but not before we preview it for you and bring you all the interesting news!

Check back soon and see you at the theatre!

  1. Great inteview! Unfortunately I haven’t had a chance to see this yet but as a huge fan of all things Addams I can’t wait for it to make its way out West. I’ve been a fan of the show since I was a kid and though I like the movies, and the New Yorker cartoons are awesome, the TV show is where it all started for me. Now I watch it at DISH Online to which I have free access as a customer/employee…they have over 125 episodes of the classic TV show. Go here to check it out http://bit.ly/dJzWgo Thanks again for the great review…hope to see the show soon!
